British Handball 1-0 Volcano
The highly reported eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland and the subsequent grinding to a halt of Europe’s airports left the Men’s GB Handball squad stranded in the UK when all scheduled flights from Stanstead, Heathrow and Gatwick were cancelled. As the official logistics provider for GB Handball, Sportworks erupted into action!
The senior men’s GB Handball team had been at their training camp from 11-18th April 2010 at the Crystal Palace National Stadium – not a problem you would think..... but as the players live and play in professional leagues all over Europe, they needed to get home. These camps are vital for the GB team giving them the chance to train collectively.
In the midst of the disruption, Sportworks organised a coach from their London training camp to Brussels; however this was only half the battle. With individual player travel destinations ranging across Europe including Switzerland, Hungary and Serbia, this was to be a complicated task.
Step forward Sportworks’ “hero of the hour” Matt Green. He took it on himself to travel with the team to Brussels and from there organising the safe travel of all the players to their home addresses.
Happily all members of the Handball team arrived home safely thanks to the quick response and organisational skills of the Sportworks team in this unpredictable and demanding situation.
Take that Eyjafjallajoekull!
