'En Garde' at Fencing's World Championships in Belfast

International event management company, Sportworks, was ‘En Garde’ at Belfast’s Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships, as the official event director.

The consultancy was responsible for managing the logistics and overall operations for the event, which attracted 1108 athletes from 89 countries across the globe, from 4 to 13 April.

The event marked a Northern Ireland debut as host of this high profile championships, which saw the highest calibre of international fencers competing in the Foil, Sabre and Epee disciplines.

Commenting on the scale of the event, Piers Martin, chief executive of British Fencing said: “Fencing has an incredible heritage and is continuing to grow in profile as a sport, from grass roots level to world-class competition standard.”

Added Tom Wenham, director of Sportworks: “This was a great coup for us, given the prestige of the event on the international fencing circuit.

“With a record number of athletes attending, our logistics and operational strategy was instrumental to the smooth running of the event. We were also able to showcase the UK’s capability of hosting international sporting championships in the crucial pre 2012 period.”
