Sportworks to Sponsor Sheffield Hallam University Sport Conference
Sportworks UK are to be the main sponsor of the PE, Sport Development & Coaching Student Conference to be held in January 2007 at Sheffield Hallam University.
It will be the first event of its kind within the UK and as such, Sheffield Hallam is looking to set the standards in relation to providing Physical Education, Sport Development & Coaching students with the most varied and up to date knowledge and learning experiences as possible whilst at University.
Over 450 students will attend this conference as part of their ongoing development as undergraduates and postgraduates. It is hoped that that the conference will further inspire them to work within the professional areas of PE, Sport Development and Coaching once they graduate.
The PESDC teaching team believe that a professional conference environment will benefit the students in a number of ways, not only in terms of enhancing their knowledge, but also in looking at their own personal and professional development. The student delegates will have the opportunity to select their own workshops according to their interests and developmental needs, mix with other peers and year groups and of course interact with professionals from the industry within which they hope to work.
The Conference is fortunate to have already attracted a number of high level PE & sport professionals to speak in addition to those working in related areas such as Health and Social Inclusion. There will be the opportunity for the student delegates to experience some practical sessions as well as large keynotes and smaller workshops within the University itself. Whilst during this first year we are only hosting our own students, it is possible that in subsequent years the event could expand to include other Universities as well as local delegates from the PE & sport professions.
Developing skills, knowledge and expertise for the sports industry
Sport and recreation has a workforce of 621,000 people in paid employment, working in 231,000 businesses and organisations throughout the UK, spread across the public, private and voluntary sectors. It has growth forecasts and the potential to expand to a workforce of 750,000 in paid employment by 2008.
The Government has recognised the need to produce a better skilled and more qualified workforce for Britain, across all sectors of industry. Their new strategy “21st Century Skills – Realising Our Potential” was published in July 2003 and firmly links skills development to productivity, competitiveness, and economic performance at national, regional and local levels.
At Sportworks we are working with the National Association for Sports Development and SkillsActive to provide training opportunities aligned to national standards for people working in sport and to assist students to get started on the career ladder.
