SSCo Training Pilot
Over the last 12 months the YST has been consulting with the network to develop the future direction of skill development training for School Sport Coordinators. Outcomes of this consultation have confirmed that there is a real need to focus on the following areas:
- Ensure that any training is meaningful by linking individuals to accreditation routes from the training they receive
- Ensure that training is part of a coherent process for the individual and there is an opportunity to apply learning in between training.
The YST has embarked on a pilot programme with Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) to trial approaches to these principles. SHU have developed an innovative new package of support for School Sport Coordinators and for the this academic year, the pilot will be centered around the Yorkshire region only.
ssp enhance programme
- enhancing cutting edge knowledge and expertise
SSP Enhance is the new look package of education and training support for the School Sport
Partnership infrastructure. It is part of the YST website and will grow to become the
one-stop-shop of information relating to all infrastructure knowledge and skill development,
which is provided by the Youth Sport Trust. The initial information housed on there is an
overview of our support from September 2008. Going forward as the support develops the
webpage will be updated with course materials; best practice information and shared
experiences from the network.
Sheffield Hallam University
– MSc in Managing Sport Development
The MSc in Managing Sport Development at Sheffield Hallam University is an innovative and
progressive course aimed at current professionals who wish to develop their theoretical,
academic and practical skills to understand and deal with the changing sport and school sport
environment. This course aims to meet your personal and professional development needs
and forms the basis for you to reflect on your own practice.
The course focuses upon integrating development skills to solve contemporary problems
whilst examining current policy and practice from within the UK and abroad. Business,
research and leadership skills are all studied in order to provide a solid foundation for the
modules that you take.
The course will be delivered through a variety of methods including study schools, weekends, evenings and distance learning in order that it is accessible for a wide range of professionals. Full attendance on the Enhance School Sport Co-ordinator CPD programme will allow you to achieve 30 credits towards the MSc award if an additional assessment is also taken. This would in effect be in place of the 'Advanced Skills for Sport Development' module. It should also be noted that Sheffield Hallam University is currently in the process of developing a new award for a September 2009 start. The MSc in PE & Youth Sport will run alongside the MSc in Managing Sport Development and share a number of core modules. The Enhance programme will also be able to transfer credits to this course once an assessment has been successfully taken.
